One Side: Acceptable, Because Scale Is What Keeps a Craft Alive

Those who take this position begin with the arithmetic. A full traditional process means long cycles and high loss: materials must wait, each stage must dry through, and a slip at one step voids everything before it. Objects made that way are necessarily expensive and necessarily bought by few. Few buyers mean no apprentices, and the craft ends with one person.

From this angle, handing the standardised, repetitive early stages to machines while leaving the finishing that determines texture and character to human hands is a pragmatic division of labour: capacity rises, price falls, young buyers can afford it, and the craft stays on the market. Survive first, then talk of guarding: that is this side's strongest argument.

The Other Side: Unacceptable, Because Handmade Is a Promise

Objections centre on asymmetry of information. The buyer pays a handmade price and receives a hybrid object, and the two are often indistinguishable from the outside. The difference between a machine-ground body or pattern and a hand-worked one is not necessarily visible to an ordinary eye.

The second reason concerns a boundary that slides. Let the machine do the first eight stages today and it may do nine tomorrow. Step by step the handmade portion shrinks while the word handmade stays on the label. When consumers stop believing the word, the makers who kept the full process are dragged down with it.

The hybrid mode means a production process in which machines carry out some standardised stages and hands carry out the decisive ones. The dispute is not about efficiency but about labelling: whether the machine-assisted stages are disclosed to the buyer. In bamboo weaving, splitting and closing the rim are the two stages usually regarded as irreducible handwork.

Where the Line May Lie: Not Whether Machines Are Used, but Whether It Is Said

This debate will find its answer in time, though the answer ought not to come from whoever is selling. Machines in a workshop are not automatically a bad thing: some stages are steadier done by machine, and some materials genuinely can no longer be sourced. What matters comes down to two things: whether the change is written where it can be seen, and whether the price follows that disclosure honestly.

Can a piece that used machines still be called handmade?

It depends which stage used them. The handle for judging is the core process: whether the stages that determine texture, character and success were done by hand. Machines assisting with stock preparation, rough grinding or cutting is one thing; machines replacing the decisive stages is another. The first can be stated plainly; the second rarely can.

How can a buyer tell whether something is genuinely handmade?

Three checks prove useful: look for traces, since handmade pieces differ slightly from one another while factory pieces are identical; look at the closing and the reverse, where handwork is hardest to skip and machine regularity shows most easily; and ask for provenance, since an answer naming who made it, where, and which stages were hand-done raises credibility considerably. Where only style is discussed and provenance is not, ask one more question.

How does YUNHEMING treat mechanisation when selecting pieces?

We drew three lines for ourselves: only genuine handmade heritage works are taken, we work only with the bearers themselves, and the core processes must be finished by hand. Form may be contemporary and the origin may change, but these three lines do not shift by an inch. The size of the object makes no difference to them; state it up front and both the price and the label hold.

Which side are you on? If an object stated plainly that it was machine-ground and hand-finished, and was priced accordingly, would you buy it? Say so below.
