English

Start with the name. Song brocade is the brocade that developed in the Song dynasty, and because it is chiefly made in Suzhou it is also called Suzhou Song brocade.

In 2006 the weaving of Song brocade was inscribed on the national list of representative intangible cultural heritage items published by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, item number VIII-14, in the traditional crafts category, proposed by Suzhou in Jiangsu, with the Suzhou Silk Museum as protecting body. In 2009, as an important part of China's sericulture and silk weaving, it was inscribed on UNESCO's representative list of the intangible cultural heritage of humanity.

Its weave has a temperament of its own: warp and weft show the pattern together, and the distinctive technique of changing colour by throwing the weft enriches both the coloured threads and the structural layers. Visually it uses shifting geometric frames filled with natural flowers and auspicious motifs over a harmonious ground, bright without being vulgar.

According to public sources, traditional Song brocade passes through more than twenty stages from reeling and dyeing to finished cloth. Many stages do not make a small piece easy; on the contrary, smallness magnifies the error in each one.

Warp threads and coloured wefts crossing on the loom, the pattern showing fine layers under light

The first is where to cut. Song brocade patterns have a skeleton, with geometric units repeating, and where you cut decides whether the result looks right. Half a unit off and the motif breaks across the face of the pouch, looking mismatched. How many pouches a length yields depends on the repeat of the pattern, not on how quick the cutter is.

The second is the edge. Silk frays the moment it is cut, so an edge must hold without going stiff. Well done, the finishing follows the form and feels like a single line; done roughly, the mouth fuzzes and lifts at the corners and looks worn after a few uses.

The third is lining and structure. Brocade is a face fabric, not a structural one. For a pouch to stand and keep its shape when filled depends on the interlining and the design; if that layer is sloppy, no quality of brocade will hold it up.

Detail of the pouch's stitched mouth and corner, the seam drawing tight along the turn

Look first at whether the pattern is complete, whether the main motif is cut off and whether the two sides balance. Second, look at the edge: whether stitching is even, whether corners sit flat, whether there is fuzzing. Third, look inside: whether the lining lies flat and whether excess glue shows. Finally touch it, since Song brocade feels supple with a backbone rather than limp.

One more point is less visible but solid: ask who wove the brocade and which workshop it came from. Whoever can answer usually has an account of every stage.

Large pieces hang on a wall; small ones are held. The latter are touched daily, dropped into bags and set on desks, used far more often and far more likely to show their faults. For that reason a well-made small brocade piece often says more about the current standard of the craft than a large panel does.

How does Song brocade differ from Yunjin and Shu brocade?

The most visible difference lies in how the pattern appears and in temperament. Song brocade shows pattern through warp and weft together, using weft colour changes to enrich threads and layers, with an antique and restrained manner, long used for scroll mounting and clothing; Yunjin is known for ornamented gold and brocaded colour and looks sumptuous; Shu brocade raises its pattern on the warp with a brisker look. All three belong to the Chinese brocade family with distinct characters.

How should Song brocade be used and cared for daily?

Avoid three things: strong sun, damp and sharp friction. Silk fibre fears ultraviolet light and fades and brittles under long exposure; store dry through the rainy season to avoid mildew; corners and edges wear first, so separate them from hard objects. Leave cleaning to textile specialists rather than washing it yourself.

How can one tell whether a brocade was hand-woven or machine-made?

Study the back and the selvedge. Hand weaving leaves thread ends and joins treated more freely, with very slight variation in tension within one repeat; machine cloth is regular on both faces with patterns identical to the thread, and edges are usually heat-cut or tightly overlocked. Hand-woven cloth also tends to come narrower, and its price carries the hours.

How do the pieces YUNHEMING takes differ from souvenirs sold at scenic spots?

There is only one standard: the object must come from the hands of a genuine bearer and be completed by hand according to the traditional process. Printing heritage patterns onto production-line goods is not part of what we do. The test has three parts: the provenance must be real, the maker must be identifiable, and the core stages must remain handwork. Whether it is genuine shows in whether each piece's origin can be stated plainly.

Whether a brocade can enter daily life depends not on how large it is made but on how much of the care hidden in the full width survives once it is cut down small.
