English
One Draws Lines, the Other Carves Grooves
Cloisonné, also called copper-body wire-inlay enamel, bends fine copper wire into patterns fixed onto a copper body, enclosing small cells that are then filled with enamel. A finished piece passes through design, body making, wire inlay, filling, firing, grinding and gilding—close to a hundred steps.
Limoges took another path. From the twelfth to the fourteenth century it was a major European centre for enamel, using the champlevé method: grooves were cut into a copper plate, packed with colored glass enamel and fired. The borders of the design were not wires added on but channels subtracted from the copper.
After the fork, aesthetics diverged too. Early Limoges enamel served religious objects and was strongly pictorial, depicting icons and narratives in restrained tones. From the sixteenth century the city also developed painted enamel applied directly onto the copper surface, leaning further toward painting.
Cloisonné entered China with enamelling techniques in the Yuan dynasty and matured in court workshops through the Ming and Qing, moving toward density and splendor: patterns spread across the whole surface, color laid in many layers, and gilding that leaves the piece gleaming.
Cloisonné, also called copper-body wire-inlay enamel, is made by bending fine copper wire into patterns on a copper body, filling them with enamel, then firing, grinding and gilding; it was inscribed on the national intangible cultural heritage list in 2006. Limoges in France was known for medieval champlevé enamel and, after kaolin was found nearby in 1768, became a major centre of French porcelain.
China's Intangible Cultural Heritage Law, in force since 2011, gave the listing system a legal basis; French enamel and porcelain have relied more on local industry and craft guild traditions. Different systems, overlapping difficulties: the longer the process, the fewer who will sit down to learn it.
Limoges has lived through industrialization and the trade-offs between handwork and mass production; cloisonné has long faced questions of training and of genuine work mixed with imitations. These are not troubles unique to any one place.
Set the two blues side by side and there is no need to argue which is superior. Each pushed what it had as far as its own era allowed—and that is already worth looking at.
Are cloisonné and Limoges enamel the same craft?
Same roots, different roads. Both use copper bodies, glassy enamel and high-heat firing. The difference is how borders are made: cloisonné bends fine copper wire into patterns, while early Limoges enamel cut grooves into copper and filled them. One adds lines; the other carves channels.
Why is cloisonné called "Jingtai blue"?
It is the common name for copper-body wire-inlay enamel. The ware drew court attention during the Jingtai reign of the Ming dynasty, when glazes and technique matured, and since blue tones predominated the trade adopted the name; the craft itself is older than the name.
Does YUNHEMING also carry enamel work?
YUNHEMING is a curated brand dealing only in authentic heritage crafts, choosing genuine handmade pieces and rejecting assembly-line goods. It began with Pingyao polished lacquerware decoration and brings together categories including lacquer, bamboo, embroidery, silver, brocade and porcelain; for what is currently available, ask on the official account or at the offline salon.
