A Table in the Middle of the Fair, with No Glass Case

Chaoyang red-clay sculpture is a representative item of Liaoning provincial-level intangible cultural heritage, made in Chaoyang in Liaoning. Its material is the ochre-red clay of the local hills: high in iron, strongly plastic, slow to crack as it dries, yet difficult to model and to paint. The material sets the temperament, and the temperament sets the technique.

According to Xinhua News Agency's report of October 17, 2026: Sun Yu'en, representative bearer of the Chaoyang red-clay sculpture at Liaoning provincial level, has worked the craft for many years, beginning his systematic study in 1998 under a master, and commands the core stages of selecting clay, mixing, beating, modelling and painting.

A corner of a red-clay sculpture workbench, with clay, bamboo knives and half-finished pieces

One detail at the fair said more than the work itself: there was no glass case and no barrier rope. The bench stood in the middle of the crowd, with three things at hand: raw Chaoyang red-clay powder, a boiled and cooled cotton-floss slurry, and hand-made mineral pigment paste. Children stood on tiptoe and reached out, and the bearer handed them wet clay straight from his hands. Squeeze it, he said, don't be afraid of breaking it; clay likes being warmed by hands.

Why the Clay Moves: A Step Called "Adding Cotton Floss"

Making clay sculpture move did not come from one clever idea. It came from two concrete changes to the craft.

The first change is in the material. Tear absorbent cotton into floss and work it into wet clay and its toughness rises sharply, so that a sleeve fold as thin as 0.3 millimetres can hang in the air without snapping. This is an old method, since folk clay work has long added fibre against cracking, though few have pushed it to such a thin limit. The second is in the structure: a tiny brass spring and a rotating axle set inside the clay body, giving head, eyes and tail a point on which to move.

Clay mixed with cotton floss, beaten repeatedly; toughness and plasticity come from this step

What matters is that the part that moves is the structure, not the process. The beating alone took him three years to learn: the lump thrown and slammed a thousand times over until it is supple as dough and draws out into threads without breaking. Too dry and it is brittle; too wet and it slumps. Spring clay is soft and suits drapery; autumn clay is firm and suits sinew. None of this judgment can yet be handed to an instrument.

"The 8 A.M. Subway Crowd": Modelling Modern Exhaustion in Earth

From 2021 he began taking the traditional repertoire apart. Flat colour gave way to graded washes; the forms borrowed the storyboard logic of animation. Alongside the Eight Immortals and the gods of fortune, a series called "The 8 A.M. Subway Crowd" appeared: the commuter with a briefcase mid-yawn, the student with earphone cords down his chest, the girl clutching a cup of soy milk and squinting at her phone. The expression is exact down to the lines at the corner of an eye and the direction of a strand of hair, and internet users named it the northeast version of a terracotta emoji.

The point here is not cuteness but identification. Traditional subjects speak of fortune and longevity, of someone else's good life. The subway crowd is about you. Young people stop for a craft not usually because it is old but because it has described them.

Traffic Only Counts as Opportunity If You Can Catch It

Short video can push a craft to 270 million views, but views do not turn themselves into apprentices. The heritage world has seen its share of cases where this went wrong: three months of fame, orders that cannot be filled, work that cannot be produced, and after the heat passes, a field of complaints.

What lets Chaoyang catch it is not last-minute improvisation but capital laid down over decades. The clay is local, so there is no need to look elsewhere for material. The process is complete, with none of the eight stages missing: selecting, washing, mixing, beating, resting, modelling, drying in shade, firing where required, and painting. The teaching is continuous, with clay classes running in libraries and primary schools. With those three in place, attention arrives as a guest; without them, it is only passers-by.

The Real Line: Structure May Move, Process May Not

When an old craft goes young, the question that comes at it is whether heritage has been turned into a toy. The answer lies in what it was that moved.

Subject matter can change, painting can change, structure can take a spring and an axle; all of this belongs to the level of expression. Selecting clay by its iron content and plasticity, beating the lump a thousand times, drying in shade at the pace the clay sets, painting with mineral pigment: this belongs to the level of craft, and move any part of it and the stability of the material changes, and with it the life of the piece. The first is a craft adjusting how it speaks; the second is the craft being replaced.

That gives the simplest yardstick for judging any heritage innovation: look at what was dropped. If what was dropped is form, it usually deserves encouragement. If what was dropped is process, then only the name was borrowed.

What is Chaoyang red-clay sculpture, and how does it differ from ordinary clay modelling?

The difference begins with the material. Chaoyang red-clay sculpture is a representative item of Liaoning provincial-level intangible cultural heritage, made from the ochre-red clay of the local hills, high in iron and strongly plastic, slow to crack when dry. Its process runs through selecting, washing, mixing, beating, resting, modelling, shade-drying, firing and painting, and the beating alone means slamming the lump a thousand times over. Ordinary clay modelling rarely specifies clay and beating counts so precisely.

Do clay sculptures that move still count as heritage handwork?

Yes, provided the core process has not been dropped. What makes the piece move is mainly structural and pictorial: a tiny brass spring and a rotating axle inside the body, graded washes instead of flat colour. The stages that determine the material's stability, selecting clay, beating, resting and shade-drying, remain in the maker's hands, and each piece is still finished by hand. The test is the process, not the shape.

When young people pay for heritage, are they buying the craft or the feeling?

Usually both, but in that order: feeling first, craft second. Form and subject make someone stop; whether they stay depends on whether the story behind it can be told clearly, where the material came from, how many stages the process has, who made it. The first decides the first encounter, the second whether there is one. Feeling without craft, and repeat custom stops.

What does YUNHEMING do for heritage makers?

It does the work of a heritage agent: from a public-interest angle it films products and videos for makers, recording the process stage by stage, and helps open channels and overseas opportunities. The maker concentrates on the craft; being seen is the brand's job. Whether a collaboration happens comes down to two things: whether the work is genuine heritage handwork, and whether its key stages are still done by hand.
