English
Silver has blackened — what should I do, and can I use a polishing cloth every day?
First tell sulfidation from dirt. Blackening is usually silver reacting with sulfides in the air to form silver sulfide, which is normal; a polishing cloth will deal with it, but not every day, since such cloths carry abrasives and chemicals that gradually wear away chased patterns and intentional patina. For daily care, wipe lightly with a soft dry cloth and store sealed away from damp; for pieces with complex chasing or inlay, a professional is safer.
Can a split bamboo object be repaired?
Usually yes, depending on where the split is. Hairline cracks generally come from shrinkage in dry air and can be eased by moistening the spot lightly with water or a glycerin-based conditioner, then flattening and drying in shade; never dry it in strong sun or an oven. A broken strip needs a replacement strip, matched, shaved and re-woven by someone who knows the craft, and the join will leave a mark, which is a normal repair trace. Prevention is easier than repair: bamboo fears dryness and sun, so keep it ventilated at stable humidity and avoid stacking weight on it for long periods.
Can heritage pieces be commissioned, and how long does it usually take?
Yes, and lead times vary greatly by category. It usually runs five steps: state the purpose and budget, settle the technique and the maker, confirm the design with a sample for complex patterns, production with progress updates along the way, then acceptance and delivery along with care instructions. Handmade lacquerware is often measured in months; embroidery depends on area and stitch density; silver and small pieces are comparatively quicker. Before ordering, it is worth asking how the schedule was built — the more detailed the answer, the more transparent the process.
Our family has an old craft. Does YUNHEMING help with content and sales channels?
Yes — this is exactly what a heritage agent does. On a public-interest basis it films products and videos for makers, records the process of the craft, and helps connect them to channels and to opportunities abroad. Whether a collaboration works depends on two things: whether the craft is genuine heritage handwork, and whether its process can still be completed by hand. Suitable masters are also welcome through the business contact at the end of this piece.
Bamboo weaving refers to the traditional handcraft of splitting bamboo into strips or filaments and interlacing them into vessels; splitting usually comes from shrinkage in dry conditions and can be repaired by inserting a new strip. Blackening in silver is a sulfidation reaction and can be reversed with treatment. The lead time of a handmade object corresponds to the waiting built into the process — in Pingyao polished lacquerware, coated with raw lacquer, then dried and hand-polished, the decoration technique was inscribed on the national intangible cultural heritage list in 2006 (Ministry of Culture and Tourism). For a specific object, follow the maker's own instructions.
Four questions, one line: silver suffers from frequent polishing, bamboo from dryness and sun, lead time corresponds to waiting. Whether a piece can be repaired or waited for depends on whether provenance and care were made clear when it was bought; asking one question early saves a good deal of trouble later.
