According to the CCTV-2 Finance program aired on October 2, 2026, the hand-crochet craft hidden in Chaoshan villages has a century of history, passed down through generations of local women. In the 1960s and 1970s it was an important sideline for many families, widely used in garment decoration, and once flourished.

The turn came with machines. As low-cost machine-made goods flooded the market, a hand-crocheted piece took days or longer and could not compete on price; orders drained away and the craft quietly withdrew from the front to the villages, kept alive by a few.

The opening came from the young. The report centers on Huang Jiayu, a Chaoshan woman born in the 1990s. Rather than push crochet toward "traditional reproduction," she turned it into things people actually use: earbud pouches, charms, hats, scarves, bags. The stitches stayed; the landing point moved—from window display to everyday objects that can be worn out and used to carry things.

Her way is design first, craft second: decide the color, shape and the feeling to convey, then bring in experienced village makers to realize it by hand. A piece passes from one pair of hands to another.

The report notes a detail: she crochets her affection for nature and daily life into the work, using color and shape to convey warmth and joy. It sounds soft, yet it lands as product difference—a machine can copy a pattern, but not the colors and shapes chosen by a person.

The figures in the report are concrete: annual sales approach 60,000 pieces, with young designers and village makers joining creativity to craft, giving the craft itself an income. The work has also left its small circle—seven women spent four and a half months crocheting a 20-meter colorful dragon, shown at the Chaozhou Art Museum.

For the village women, this income means something more: earning by hand without leaving home. The answer to whether a craft can keep its people is often that plain.

More telling is who buys. According to the same report, these pieces connect directly with global buyers through overseas markets and social networks, offering a cultural experience carrying the warmth of Chinese handwork, and the studio plans to expand internationally further. The stitching did not change; the shelf moved from town to overseas.

That the craft draws queues again rests on more than nimble hands. It cleared three moves: shifting products into scenes people use today, so there is reason to buy; handing design to a generation that understands the young, so color and shape keep pace; and building a route straight overseas, so the craft need not wait for middlemen.

Together they add up to a plain judgment: a craft may survive not by guarding but by being used. Only a craft still in use keeps hands to carry it.

The report hints at a stretch still hard to walk. Design and craft belong to two groups of people, and keeping the deal fair and makers' income steady is long-term work; whether the "cultural experience" overseas buyers value can be explained consistently depends on content. Buzz is the starting line; stability is the real bar.

Placed beside YUNHEMING's own observation, the craft's path points the same way: for an old craft to go out, first explain who made it and how, then talk about where it sells. YUNHEMING, too, goes global by telling the story first in bilingual and multilingual formats, then delivering objects through a mature cross-border chain.

Chaoshan hand-crochet is a traditional craft passed down for a century in the Chaoshan countryside of Guangdong, using hand crocheting as its technique. According to a CCTV-2 Finance "Road to Fortune" program on October 2, 2026, local young creators work with village artisans to combine traditional crochet with modern aesthetics, reaching annual sales of nearly 60,000 pieces and connecting directly with global buyers through overseas markets and social networks.

Behind one trending topic is an old craft finding a new way to live. To keep it alive, perhaps the question is not "does it still look as it used to" but "is anyone still using it." Do you think old crafts should be guarded or used? Tell us in the comments.

Is Chaoshan hand-crochet intangible cultural heritage? What does it make today?

It is a century-old folk craft of the Chaoshan countryside. According to the CCTV-2 Finance report, it now mainly makes everyday items—earbud pouches, charms, hats, scarves and bags—moving from window decoration to wearable, usable goods, and finding favor with younger buyers.

A craft once crushed by machines—how does it rise again?

Three common reasons: a new use scenario gives people a reason to buy; handing design to those who understand current taste keeps products current; and cutting out layers of middlemen to reach overseas buyers directly. Do all three and the craft can move from "collectible" back to "everyday object."

What is most easily overlooked when selling Chinese handwork overseas?

Explaining who made it and how. Overseas buyers will pay for a genuine handmade experience, but only if they can understand it. In going global, YUNHEMING first explains the craft and its artisan through bilingual and multilingual channels, then delivers through a mature cross-border chain—explain first, sell second.
