推光为什么用手不用布

漆器行里有一道工序叫推光，用的是手掌，不是布。头一回听到的人多半会反问一句，手比布还细吗？答案其实不只在"细"上，还在于手是活的，布是死的。这道看着不起眼的工序，决定了器物最后那层光。

▍一道用手的工序

平遥推光漆器的髹饰，有髹涂、阴干、推光等多道工序。前几层刷漆、进阴干房，是让漆定下来；到了推光这一步，匠人用手掌蘸上油和细粉，在漆面上反复摩擦，一遍一遍，直到表面由哑转亮。

▍手掌做了三件事

头一件是温度。手掌有体温，来回摩擦又生热，漆面因此微微变软，表层被"熨"得更服帖。第二件是压力。手掌是软的，贴合得住盘的弧面，力道能匀开，不会在一处堆着。第三件是油脂。掌心的油与细粉配在一起，起的是极细的磨料作用，把表面的微小起伏一点点带平。

▍布为什么不行

布的问题，恰恰在这三件事上都差一截。布不带温；布是纤维织的，贴在弧面上，接触点其实是一处一处，压力集中，边角要么磨过头，要么磨不到；布也不出油。用布推，很难把一只盘推出均匀的光。

一道工序用手还是用布，说到底是对"匀"的挑剔。手这双活了多年的工具，恰好能把均匀这件事做到别的东西做不到的程度。

The decoration of Pingyao polished lacquerware involves coating, drying, polishing and more. Earlier layers are brushed on and left in the drying room to set; at the polishing stage, the artisan dips the palm in oil and fine powder and rubs the surface again and again, until it turns from matte to bright.

First, temperature. The palm carries body heat, and friction adds more, so the surface softens slightly and is "pressed" flatter. Second, pressure. A palm is soft and follows a tray's curve, spreading the force rather than piling it in one spot. Third, oil. The oil of the palm, paired with fine powder, acts as an extremely fine abrasive, leveling tiny highs and lows little by little.

A cloth falls short on all three. It carries no warmth; woven from fiber, it touches a curved surface only point by point, concentrating pressure, so edges are either over-worked or missed; and it yields no oil. Polishing with cloth rarely gives a tray an even sheen.

Whether a step uses a hand or a cloth comes down to a fussiness about evenness. The hand, a tool that has lived for years, happens to carry evenness further than anything else can.

Why polish with the palm? Can't a machine do it?

The palm brings warmth, even pressure and oil at once, and only the three together polish a surface both bright and even. Machine polishing applies force strongly and in one direction, easily over-working a curve; the result glistens but lacks the soft layers of hand-polishing. This step is judged by the hand for a reason.
